Nike and its Ad campaign in relation to T.H.U.G.
Many people have mixed views as to whether or not Nike should take part in Kaepernick's controversial stand on taking a knee during the national anthem.
When listening to this podcast I want you think about and answer the following questions:
How have people reacted to Nike’s new ad campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick?
How did some people who were offended by the ad campaign express their views using video?
According to a sports business expert, how does this ad campaign fit into Nike’s history?
Why has Kaepernick sued the NFL?
What does the expert interviewed for this story mean when he says the NFL is unlikely to retaliate against Nike by ending their contract because “It would provide more oxygen for this controversy”?
How do experts think the ad campaign will affect Nike’s business? Why?
After answering the questions above I want you to work in pairs and discuss the following questions:
Does Nike’s new ad campaign make you more or less likely to buy their products? Why?
Do you agree with the predictions of the experts interviewed about whether Nike’s choice to feature Kaepernick will prove to be a worthwhile risk? Why or why not?
Once you have finished answering and discussing the following questions, I want you to relate Kaepernick's stand back to the stand Starr's friends, family and community are trying to make in Garden Heights.
Is Starr's stand anywhere close to that of Kaepernick's?
What about Starr's blog, is there a coorelation here between what Kaepernick stands for and what Starr stands for?
Discuss these ideas with your classmates and be prepared to share your thoughts in class.
