How is our identity decided before we even speak?
Frankenstein created a creature that was so ugly and horrifying to all that he was not only outcast from society but from his own creator. What does this say about us as a society? How do we decide who should be welcomed into our world and who shouldn't? Throughout the past few years, various people have been judged by their appearance alone.
One prominent example comes to mind here, Susan Boyle. Having forgotten her name, I googled "ugly winner of idol" and there it was, her wikipedia page one of the top choices in my search engine.
But who decides who and what is ugly? What characteristics must a person have to fall into this category? And do people who change their appearance still fall under this category?
After Susan Boyle won Idols in 2009, it was Simon himself who decided he would never again judge people based on their appearances. But what about the judges of Holland's Got Talent? Have they learned their lesson?
See here as Lisette Brillemans, having auditioned before for Holland's Got Talent, was not only judged by her appearance but also her reputation. Paul de Leeuw, having seen his other jury member push his big red button decides to do that same thing. Basing his opinion not on performance but on appearances and reputation alone.
Here it can be seen that Lisette's outer appearance and reputation causes two of the jury members to reject her even before she has the chance to speak.
Another example of a character being judged by his outappearance is the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. Here an updated version of this story shows a man who is judged by his outer appearance. A man who too has been deemed as a freak, all because of the way he looks.
If you type "Am I" into a search engine the first answer that comes up after in 'Am I' is 'Am I Ugly'.
So who decides what is ugly and what is not? When looking to the internet for these answers I came across this article. An article that questions as to how one can be deemed ugly or not.
